Homeowners Insurance Coverage FAQ
Navigating the homeowners insurance claim process can be challenging, especially if you are doing it for the first time. Let our Florida homeowners insurance attorneys be your guide! When answering questions about insurance coverage, it's important to understand that not all insurance policies are the same. The answers to these questions will vary depending on the amount of coverage you have, so it's important that you refer to your own homeowners policy. However, in general, these answers hold true for most homeowners insurance policies.
- Does Homeowners Insurance cover fire? - Yes! In general, homeowners policies will cover damage to both your home and your belongings if they are damaged or destroyed in a fire. This means that your insurance company should pay to either repair or replace any of those items that are damaged in a fire.
- Does Homeowners Insurance cover flooding? - Generally flood insurance is not included in the standard homeowners insurance package. However, it is possible to obtain flood coverage via the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and in some cases other private insurance companies. If you have this type of coverage, you are most likely eligible to obtain compensation for flood damages.
- Does Homeowners Insurance cover hurricane damage? - Most homeowners living in Florida know the importance of having a policy that covers hurricane damage. In most circumstances homeowners policies will cover hurricane damage primarily caused by wind. However, most will not cover damage caused by flooding (with the exception of those insurance companies mentioned above). In some circumstances, if wind damage was the cause of certain flooding (i.e. the wind tore the roof off of your house and allowed rain to get in) this may be covered by your policy.
- What does Homeowners Insurance not cover? - A standard homeowners insurance policy will typically not cover the following: flooding, earthquakes, sinkholes, other natural disasters, damage caused by negligence or regular wear and tear including infestations, sewer backups, etc.
Has your insurance company unfairly denied your claim for compensation under any of the above circumstances? We're here to help!
